METICOS – A Platform for Monitoring and Prediction of Social Impact and Acceptability of Modern Border Control Technology is coordinated by CERIDES – Excellence in Innovation and Technology.  This RIA – Research and Innovation action is funded by H2020-SU-SEC-2019, under a 36-month contract (883075) and it officially started in September 1st 2020.

It is with immense pleasure that METICOS will be participating in a closed workshop organized by FRONTEX and the European Border and Coast Guard (EBCG) community (FRONTEX agency and Member States Authorities) on the 20th and 21st of May 2021.

The Project Coordinator of METICOS, Pantelis Velanas, PHD, Senior Research Fellow representing the European University of Cyprus will present METICOS to the European Boarder and Coast Guard community going through the scope and focus of the project and plans for the future.

The EU-funded METICOS project aims to create an up-to-date acceptance classification scheme as well as a societal and ethical impact dashboard of border control technologies, to empower three major sub-divisions of the wider border control sector: travelers, border control authorities and service providers.

FRONTEX is the European Boarder and Coast Guard Agency and is an essential part of Europe’s efforts to safeguard the area of freedom, security and justice. Frontex’s support at the external borders helps guarantee free movement without internal borders checks that many of us take for granted. FRONTEX gives us Europe’s first uniformed service and funds to build our own equipment pool and contribute to the development of Europe’s integrated border management.

Frontex has three strategic objectives: reduce vulnerability of the external borders based on comprehensive situational awareness; guarantee safe, secure and well-functioning EU borders, and plan and maintain European Border and Coast Guard capabilities.

The aim of the workshop is for the European Boarder and Coast Guard community to be familiarised with the H2020 project that are ongoing and identify innovation insertion and operation testing opportunities.
