Nicosia Risk Forum 2019

EUC Cultural Center, Nicosia November 21st 2019
The 2nd Annual Symposium of the Center of Excellence in Risk and Decision Sciences (CERIDES), the “Nicosia Risk Forum”

Symposium Aim

The Center of Excellence in Risk and Decision Sciences (CERIDES) is a focal point for Security and Safety – related issues in South Eastern Europe. CERIDES, during its short period of existence, has accumulated more than 2.4 million Euros in competitive research funding. It is currently participating in various international and national research projects which are being funded through schemes such as Horizon 2020, DG ECHO, DG HOME, DG JUSTICE, ISF, Marie Curie Training Networks, ERASMUS+, as well as funding schemes of the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation.

In November 14th 2018, CERIDES organized the 1st ever ‘Nicosia Risk Forum’, an innovative event for the area of South-Eastern Europe, which brought together academic, industrial, governmental, and other societal stakeholders with a significant interest in the theory and applications of risk. After the successful implementation of the 1st ‘Nicosia Risk Forum’, and the very positive feedback we received from all participants, CERIDES is happy to announce that the 2nd ‘Nicosia Risk Forum’ will take place at the premises of European University Cyprus on Thursday the 21st of November 2019.

The 2nd edition of the Nicosia Risk Forum is dedicated to the identification, analysis, and mitigation of risks stemming from the global phenomenon of Climate Change. These risks are interdisciplinary in nature and require the close cooperation of all societal stakeholders in order to be adequately managed. The 2nd Nicosia Risk Forum aims to make a significant contribution towards this requirement through the implementation of a number of related activities. In particular, the participants of the 2nd Nicosia Risk Forum will have the opportunity to:

  • Gain practical knowledge on managing climate change risks in their area of interest
  • Discuss with a wide range of academic, industrial, and governmental stakeholders their strategies on the management of climate change risks
  • Identify significant barriers to the effective implementation of management strategies for climate change risks
  • Explore collaboration opportunities with academic, industrial, and governmental stakeholders by attending targeted networking / brokerage activities
  • We are happy to announce that Ms Klelia Vasiliou, Deputy Government Spokeswoman, will Inaugurate the 2nd Nicosia Risk Forum.

We are also honored to announce that Dr Nikos Christodoulides, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, will deliver the closing Keynote Speech of the Conference.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus

“The Nicosia Risk Forum 2019 provides the platform for an array of stakeholders –hailing from government, academia and the private sector– to exchange views and experiences, making it a truly multi-disciplinary event that produces a high level of discourse at a timely juncture.

This well-structured forum becomes truly essential since it makes stakeholders to consider why risk analysis is important, why it is, or should be, at the core of statecraft, and why political leadership must be in a position to assess the cost and benefit of their decisions, before these are made. For all these reasons, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, actively supports the work of CERIDES and readily yields its auspices for this inspirational –and unique in nature– symposium.”

Dr. Nikos Christodoulides
