Kick Off Meeting of SIMMER (an Interreg Next Med co-funded project) in Nicosia

The kick off meeting of SIMMER (Strategic Integration of Operational and Legal Frameworks for Enhanced Resilience and Management of Mediterranean Wildfires) took place at the premises of European University Cyprus in Nicosia on December 8 and 9, 2025. The project is co-funded by Interreg Next Med and 6 partners from 6 Mediterranean countries take part.

The project will use ecosystem-based methods like prescribed burning and grazing, Artificial Intelligence, remote sensing, for risk assessment and early warning, drones for burn severity mapping, and community-based post-fire assessment. The UNESCO Chair in Disaster Risk Reduction and Societal Safety in South Eastern Mediterranean will take an active part in this project with partners from France, Greece, Cyprus, Jordan, Palestine and Lebanon.
