UNESCO Chair in Disaster Risk Reduction and Societal Safety in South Eastern Europe holder Prof Georgios Boustras had the opportunity to participate at the roundtable discussion entitled ‘Towards a Truly Integrated EU Approach on Wildfires’, organised on Friday 30 January by Jessika Roswall Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy and Hadja Lahbib Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management at the European Commission.

The effects of the climate crisis are particularly felt at the Mediterranean with an increasing number of smaller and bigger wildfires. It is particularly alarming that after years of abandonment of land, incidents occur mostly around our cities. Equally alarming is the fact that the vast majority of our societies and communities are spectators.
