Cyprus Meteorology Dept.: We will stand by CERIDES in all its efforts

The Department of Meteorology, under its Director Dr. Kleanthis Nicolaides and the responsible divisions of the Department, met on Tuesday, July 4, with a delegation from CERIDES Centre of Excellence – Excellence in Innovation and Technology of the European University Cyprus. The delegation was led by Dr. George Boustras, Professor of Risk Assessment at European University Cyprus and Special Advisor to the President of the Republic of Cyprus on Crisis Management and Civil Protection, as well as some of CERIDES researchers, namely Dr. Cleo Varianou – Mikellidou, Ms Maria – Thalia Christou, Mr Iason Senekkis, Mr Matthieu Jost and Ms Judith Kirschner.
During the meeting natural disasters were discussed with an emphasis placed on wildfires and the protection of our forests. The Department assured Dr. Boustra’s research team that it will stand by the efforts that CERIDES is undertaking in relation to the development of effective fire prevention and response systems, fire suppression systems and the management of various environmental risks, by providing the team with free access to various meteorological data maintained by the Department. In addition, it was agreed that the Department of Meteorology and the CERIDES Centre of Excellence jointly participate in various activities concerning education, research and communication of the above subjects to the general public.
